I've moved this information to a new site: SeptoplastyStories.com. This page is no longer updated.

In November of 2003, I had a septoplasty — surgery to correct a deviated nasal septum. I posted my story, and in the months that followed, other people facing the same procedure contacted me with questions. My friend Kevin encouraged me to set up a separate page, so here it is.

My septoplasty story
Before I had my surgery, I spent many hours searching the web to find personal stories of what it was like to recover from a septoplasty. Almost everything I googled just covered the technical aspects of nasal obstructions and surgeries but didn't help me understand what my life would be like for the days, weeks and months after I left the hospital. So as I went through the experience, I documented my story for the benefit of others out there.

Bill's septoplasty story
Bill from Manitoba wrote to me in February 2005 to ask questions about his upcoming surgery. The operation was March 10. (Thank you, Bill.)

Matt's septoplasty story
Matt from Detroit wrote to me in October 2004 and offered to send his personal story to post next to mine. His surgery was November 22 and his recovery sounds very similar to mine. Here's his story. (Thank you, Matt.)

Frequently-asked questions
Since my surgery, I've received several emails from people considering septum surgery and I've been able to answer a few questions and hopefully provide some encouragement. My friend Kevin suggested posting some of the questions and answers so others could benefit. Here are a few.
I'm going to have septoplasty done because I have a deviated septum and I was wondering if the surgery will change the appearance of my nose. If you could let me know that would be great. - Doug

You should ask your doctor, of course, but your septoplasty shouldn't affect your appearance at all, unless there's a complication. My doctor assured me mine wouldn't, and he was right. Most of what I've read online says septoplasty should leave no cosmetic changes at all.

Have you had a septoplasty and you're willing to share some details or advice about the recovery? Do you have questions about what to expect when you have nasal surgery? Are you trying decide whether to have surgery or not? If you want to talk, send me an email at jason@grizzlybase.com.
